Guayaquil is provincial capital of Guayas. The city is located on the "brazo de mar", on the western shore of the Guayas and about 50 km from the Pacific. With 3.14 million inhabitants (2013), it is the largest city in Ecuador. It is also the country's most important port city.

The official founding date of the city is 25 July 1547. The name has different views and stories. The most widespread is represented in a glass mosaic on the Malecon de Salado. It is the story of the chief of the Puruhá Indians named Guayas, who killed himself and his highlander wife Quill in order not to fall into the hands of the Spaniards.

The most famous sights of the city are the Malecon 2000, the Malecon de Salado, the Barrio Las Penas on the Santa Ana hill, the city's founding place, the Historical Park, as well as some interesting museums of the city.
